Resilience in the Face of Tuberculosis: Bishal Debbarma’s Journey
Enduring an arduous battle with an unknown illness, Bishal Debbarma, a 19-year-old resident of Gourhari Kami, Mandwi RD Block, West Tripura, faced numerous obstacles in obtaining a proper diagnosis despite repeated visits to GBP Hospital, Agartala. However, thanks to the proactive efforts of local members of the Lam Phunuknai Trust, Bishal’s diagnosis was finally facilitated at Mandwi Hospital, leading to a referral to Hapania Hospital, Agartala on May 04, 2020.
Following an extensive week-long diagnostic process, it was revealed that Bishal was in the advanced stages of Tuberculosis. Swift treatment commenced under medical supervision, targeting severe lung impairment and potential organ complications exacerbated by malnutrition. Adequate medication and nutritional support were administered throughout his hospitalization. After nearly four weeks, Bishal was discharged with a prescribed 12-month treatment plan and additional supportive medication, with TB medication arranged for home delivery by our team through local Asha workers.
Furthermore, our team ensured the provision of essential commodities such as eggs, chicken, fruits, and other food items weekly. Over time, Bishal’s health showed gradual improvement, instilling hope for his full recovery within our team. However, despite our unwavering support, both practically and financially, Bishal’s lack of cooperation from his family members tragically led to his passing after seven months of initiating treatment.
Bishal Debbarma’s medical journey underscores the critical importance of timely diagnosis, comprehensive treatment, and continuous support in combating tuberculosis and similar illnesses. Despite external challenges hindering his ultimate recovery, the Lam Phunuknai Trust remains steadfast in advocating for accessible healthcare and providing support to those in need within our community.
