From Darkness to Light: The Journey of Reshmi and Satyen Debbarma’s family
In Salo Fulbari village, Kamalpur, Dhalai Tripura, a significant event unfolded on March 19, 2020, when a premature and severely underweight child was born into a family, comprising Reshmi and Satyen Debbarma.
The newborn endured 75 days of struggle, grappling with respiratory issues that necessitated nearly two months of oxygen therapy. Furthermore, complications such as jaundice and anemia warranted phototherapy, blood transfusions, and a series of injections to combat infections. Despite the formidable challenges, the infant’s health gradually improved, evident in the steady weight gain to 1.6 kg. This report chronicles the journey of the family and our intervention during their time of dire need.
Upon learning of the urgent need for laser treatment of ‘Retinopathy of prematurity,’ costing approximately Rs 50000, our team swiftly responded to the distress call relayed through Dr. Ripan Debbarma, a trusted pediatric specialist at AGMC Hospital, Agartala, Tripura, alerted us to the challenging circumstances faced by the patient. It became evident that the infant’s treatment at AGMC was reaching a critical juncture, necessitating a transfer to a facility in another state due to the nature of the required specialized care. Recognizing the family’s financial constraints, our immediate intervention was essential to ensure the infant’s well-being and survival.
On June 10, 2020, following the arduous phase of treatment, plans were made to transfer the patient to Sankara Deva Netraloya Hospital, Guwahati, Assam for advanced medical care. Upon reaching the destination, however, due to delays in obtaining COVID-19 test results, the transfer was rescheduled for the subsequent day to ensure the safety of the infant.
On June 14, 2020, the infant commenced treatment at Sankara Deva Netraloya Hospital, Guwahati, Assam marking a crucial phase in the medical journey. Subsequent reports indicated encouraging progress, with the infant responding positively to the interventions, signaling a rapid recovery, with almost two more weeks to stay.
On June 27, 2020, the successful completion of the baby’s Eyes treatment marked a significant milestone. The family eagerly anticipated their return to Tripura, with the assurance of their child’s improved health and well-being. On June 30, 2020, they safely embarked on their journey back home to Tripura from Sankara Deva Netraloya Hospital, Guwahati, Assam marking the culmination of a remarkable medical journey.
