A Remarkable Journey of Hope and Healing: Peaceful Debbarma’s Triumph Over Cancer
In a small village called Brajapur, nestled within Amtali, Bishalgarh, Sepahijala district in Tripura, lives a resilient young girl named Peaceful Debbarma. Born to hardworking parents Kanuraj and Kavita Debbarma, Peaceful, now eight years old, has faced immense challenges in her young life. Despite her quiet nature and struggles with comprehension and memory, she brought joy and light to her family.
In 2018, however, her life took a challenging turn. Peaceful started experiencing recurring fevers that, at first, seemed like common childhood illnesses. Her parents believed it was likely malaria or a viral fever, especially since medications seemed to lower her fever temporarily. But when her condition worsened, and she refused food, her parents rushed her to the doctor. After a series of tests, they received the heartbreaking news: Peaceful was diagnosed with acute promyelocytic leukemia, a severe form of blood cancer affecting her white blood cells. The weight of the diagnosis was unbearable, and her mother fainted upon hearing it.
The treatment for Peaceful’s condition was both lengthy and expensive. Chemotherapy was her only chance for survival, but the facilities and expertise required for such treatment were unavailable in Tripura. Mr Kanuraj faced a daunting reality: Peaceful’s life depended on them getting her to a facility out of state, which they simply couldn’t afford. Her father, Kanuraj, drove a public vehicle and earned around 300-500 rupees a day, while her mother, Kavita, worked as a daily laborer. Their limited income barely sustained their household, leaving little hope for funding the life-saving treatment.
In their moment of desperation, Mr Kanuraj reached out to Mr. Raymond Bongcher, a member of the United Tiprasa Forum (UTF), an NGO dedicated to supporting the underprivileged in Tripura. They shared Peaceful’s story, pleading for help. Touched by their struggle, Raymond took the matter to the UTF team, and after verifying the details and discussing the situation, UTF agreed to provide financial assistance for Peaceful’s treatment. Recognizing the magnitude of the challenge, the team also decided to launch a crowdfunding campaign, entrusting Mr. Raymond with the responsibility.
With the campaign underway, UTF mobilized donations from kind-hearted individuals and offered immediate support to the family, enabling Peaceful’s transfer to Christian Medical College (CMC) Vellore for chemotherapy. The treatment journey was long and arduous, stretching over a year as Peaceful underwent continuous chemotherapy sessions.
With the relentless efforts of the UTF team, the generous donations of the public, and the skilled medical care she received, Peaceful ultimately triumphed over her illness. After a grueling year of chemotherapy, she emerged victorious, free from cancer, and finally able to live a normal life. Her recovery marked a turning point, not just for Peaceful but also for her family, who were profoundly grateful for the lifeline UTF had extended.
Today, Peaceful is a healthy, vibrant child, and her family’s gratitude toward UTF and Raymond Bongcher remains boundless. The support they received wasn’t just financial—it was a beacon of hope during their darkest hour. Peaceful’s story stands as a testament to the power of community, compassion, and perseverance, illustrating that even the most formidable challenges can be overcome with unity and support.
In honoring Peaceful’s journey, the UTF team continues to inspire and uplift the lives of countless others in Tripura, holding firm to their commitment to serve those in need.
