Empowering Local Vendors and Communities: A New Beginning at Bederai Kami
In the remote hilly areas under the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC), the struggle for survival often forces poor and underprivileged families to venture into cities or highways to sell their farm produce. The income they earn is typically insufficient to sustain their families, and the harsh elements—rainfall, gusty winds, and intense sun—pose significant challenges to these roadside vegetable vendors. In a bid to alleviate some of these difficulties, the Lam Phunuknai Trust (LPT) took a significant step by constructing two new market sheds at Bederai Kami and Annaram Para.
On Saturday, June 22, 2019, LPT team members handed over temporary roadside market sheds to local vegetable vendors at Bederai Kami. These sheds were constructed in the village of Bederai Kami, under the Purba Laxmipur Village Committee in Mungiakami, Teliamura Sub-Division, Khowai District. Approximately 70 local vendors, who sell their vegetables in this area, will benefit from these new facilities. The sheds provide much-needed protection from the elements, ensuring that vendors can sell their produce in a safer and more stable environment.
In addition to the market sheds, the event on June 22nd featured a distribution of educational kits for underprivileged children, reinforcing LPT’s commitment to supporting education in these remote areas. This initiative aimed to provide essential learning materials to children who might otherwise lack access to such resources, thereby fostering an environment where education can thrive.
Another highlight of the day was a health medical camp for local residents. The camp offered free health check-ups, malarial tests, and free medicine distribution. The involvement of the Chief Medical Officers (CMOs) from Dhalai and Teliamura was crucial in making this camp a success. Their teams showed keen interest and dedication, providing vital health services to the community. This camp underscored the importance of healthcare access in remote areas and the positive impact of collaborative efforts.
LPT expressed profound gratitude to the medical authorities and acknowledged the generous contributions of the BTS Tripura Fan Club, led by Ms Eliza. These young individuals reached out to LPT and donated aids, exemplifying a spirit of community service and social responsibility. The LPT team found inspiration in the enthusiasm and dedication of these youths, recognizing their efforts as a powerful example of how young people can make meaningful contributions to society.
In concluding the event, LPT urged the youth, especially those struggling to find purpose or self-worth, to channel their energy into social causes rather than succumbing to anti-social activities and drug addiction. By involving themselves in community service, young people can discover their potential and contribute positively to society.
The construction and handing over of market sheds at Bederai Kami marked a significant step towards empowering local vendors and improving the quality of life for families in the remote hilly areas under TTAADC. The event, enriched with educational and health initiatives, highlighted the importance of comprehensive community support. LPT’s efforts, coupled with the contributions from dedicated youths and medical authorities, exemplify how collective action can lead to sustainable development and a brighter future for all.
By providing essential infrastructure, promoting education, and ensuring access to healthcare, LPT continues to make strides in uplifting the underprivileged communities of Tripura. The new market sheds at Bederai Kami are more than just structures—they symbolize hope, resilience, and the enduring spirit of community solidarity.
