The Journey of Keffrien Reang: Battling Retinoblastoma Against All Odds
Keffrien Reang’s story is one of resilience and hardship, set against the backdrop of Laldinga Para, Chailengta, in the remote Longtraivalley of Dhalai, Tripura, India. Born into a family of five, Keffrien, at the tender age of three, faced a formidable adversary: Retinoblastoma, a rare form of eye cancer.
Early Signs and Local Challenges
It all began innocuously with a small spot in his left eye, noticed by his parents Sanjit and Ruati Reang nearly eight to nine months ago. Concerned, they sought medical advice from local doctors and hospitals. Initial treatments including eye drops, ointments, and antibiotics provided little relief and instead exacerbated the condition.
The Search for Specialized Care
Realizing the severity of Keffrien’s condition, the family journeyed to Agartala Government Medical College, where a month-long diagnosis concluded with a referral to the Regional Cancer Hospital. From there, they were directed to Sankar Netralaya in Guwahati, and finally, to Dr. B. Borooah Cancer Institute, where the diagnosis was confirmed: Retinoblastoma in his left eye.
Financial Struggles and External Support
The Reang family, earning a modest income of Rs. 3500-4000 per month, faced immense financial strain due to the extensive medical treatments required. Fortunately, their plight caught the attention of the United Tiprasa Forum (UTF), an NGO dedicated to supporting underprivileged families in healthcare crises.
On February 4, 2018, UTF intervened, facilitating Keffrien’s return to Dr. B. Borooah Cancer Institute for specialized care. Commencing on February 15, his third cycle of chemotherapy marked the beginning of a critical phase in his treatment journey. By April 23, 2018, Keffrien completed his sixth and final chemotherapy session, showing signs of improvement.
Triumphs and Setbacks
Following successful chemotherapy, Keffrien underwent a crucial eye surgery at Sankar Netraloya, Guwahati on May 16, 2018. The operation, deemed successful, offered hope for his recovery. However, amidst his recuperation back home, Keffrien faced another health setback—an acute bout of malaria.
A Heartbreaking Loss
Despite the efforts of local medical facilities to combat malaria, Keffrien tragically passed away on June 6, 2018, leaving behind a community deeply touched by his courage and resilience.
Gratitude and Reflection
In closing, the United Tiprasa Forum extends heartfelt thanks to all donors whose generosity enabled Keffrien to receive the best possible medical care during his challenging battle. Their contributions ensured that every effort was made to fight his illness with dignity and hope.
Keffrien Reang’s journey remains a poignant reminder of the struggles faced by many underprivileged families in accessing healthcare, yet also a testament to the power of community and compassion in times of adversity.
