Tragedy Strikes a Family of 14: Seven Lives Lost in an Instant Due to Landslide in South Tripura

On the night of August 20, 2024, a heartbreaking tragedy struck the family of Manoranjan Tripura and Charan Kr Tripura in Aswini Para, Gardang, Santirbazar, South Tripura. In the quiet hours between 11:30 and 11:45 p.m., a landslide tore through their home, sweeping away seven precious lives in an instant, including three young children. This disaster left a profound void in a family of 14, shattering their world overnight.

This catastrophic landslide, fueled by recent heavy rains, struck without warning, causing devastation that residents and local authorities are still coming to grips with. The scale of the disaster has cast a pall of grief over the entire community, as well as renewed concern about the vulnerabilities that remote areas face during monsoon seasons.

In response to this horrific incident, the United Tiprasa Forum (UTF) visited the surviving members of the Tripura family on August 27, 2024, to offer solace and provide essential relief supplies. This act of compassion was made possible by the contributions of UTF’s Free Coaching students, who came together to raise funds for the family. In a touching display of community support, students Moshanjit Tripura and Nipendra Tripura represented their peers, personally attending the relief distribution.

UTF’s relief package included:

  • 100 kg of rice
  • 1 carton of eggs
  • 2 Tusok mattresses
  • 2 blankets
  • 5 pillows
  • Mustard oil, dal, soyabean, soap, candles, mosquito coils, electric bulbs
  • A full set of kitchen utensils

UTF expressed its heartfelt gratitude to the students who dedicated their time and resources to support this initiative. Their generosity and dedication underscore the strength of the community spirit and the willingness to support those affected by this disaster.

This tragedy serves as a solemn reminder of the forces of nature that can alter lives in an instant. UTF remains committed to standing with the affected family and the broader community, providing not only material support but also emotional comfort in these challenging times.
