Tragic Landslide Claims Life of Young Man in Mongia Kami
On the midnight of August 20, 2024, a devastating landslide struck Mongia Kami in Khowai, Tripura, claiming the life of Dhiresh Debbarma, a young resident of the village. Due to excessive rains, the landslide swept through the family’s home, burying it completely, including the kitchen, under a thick layer of soil and debris. Tragically, while Dhiresh was caught in the disaster, his family members were outside at the time and were unharmed. His parents and younger brother were fortunate to escape as they had stepped outside moments before the landslide occurred.
The incident has left the family in a dire situation, with their home and all belongings destroyed. They are now taking shelter in the veranda of a nearby relative’s house, as they try to process the loss and begin to rebuild their lives from scratch.
In response to this tragedy, the United Tiprasa Forum (UTF) decided to extend a helping hand. On August 23, 2024, a UTF team visited the grieving family in Mongia Kami. Understanding the immediate needs of the family, the team brought essential items to help them through this difficult time. UTF provided the family with:
- Rations to cover their food needs for the coming days
- Cooking utensils to help them reestablish a basic kitchen setup
- Fresh vegetables to ensure a balanced diet
- Cash support to help meet unforeseen expenses
- Other necessary articles to ease their burden
The support offered by UTF was intended to provide temporary relief and basic necessities while the family navigates this difficult period. The team expressed deep condolences to the family and assured them that UTF would be available for additional assistance as they begin to rebuild their life and home. UTF’s visit not only offered material help but also served as a reminder to the family that they are not alone in their time of grief.
This incident highlights the increasing threat of landslides and natural disasters faced by communities in the region, especially during the monsoon season. The UTF team has called for increased awareness and disaster preparedness in vulnerable areas to prevent such tragedies in the future.
The community of Mongia Kami has also come together in solidarity with the affected family, supporting them emotionally and physically. In memory of Dhiresh Debbarma, his family and friends have resolved to work together to rebuild and stay resilient in the face of natural adversities.
