UTF Provides Relief to Landslide Victims in Atharomura, Tripura After Record-Breaking Rainfall
On August 24, 2024, the United Tiprasa Forum (UTF) team extended much-needed relief to the landslide victims of the Atharomura hill range in Khowai District, Tripura. The region was hit by a series of devastating landslides following unprecedented rainfall, which shattered a 37-year record for rainfall in the state. The heavy rains began on August 19 and continued relentlessly until August 22, leaving many families displaced and in urgent need of assistance.
UTF, committed to providing timely support to those affected, visited four relief camps in the Atharomura area where over 60 families, totaling around 250 individuals, had sought shelter after losing their homes and belongings to the landslides.
Relief Camps Visited by UTF:
- Maharanipur Bazar High School Shelter Camp – 10 families
- 36 Miles (Baskar Chara Para) – 9 families
- 43 Miles (Biladhan Reang Chow Para) – 24 families
- 39 Miles (Twi Karma Para) – 17 families
These temporary relief camps were set up in various locations to provide shelter and safety to the victims while they await further assistance and a possible return to their homes. However, the families at these camps faced significant challenges, as they were left with minimal resources and basic necessities due to the sudden disaster.
Relief Materials Distributed by UTF
Understanding the immediate needs of those affected, the UTF team brought essential relief materials to the camps, including:
- 5 kg of rice per family to help meet their daily sustenance needs.
- 4 liters of drinking water per family to ensure access to clean water.
- 6 eggs per family for protein and nutrition.
- Mustard oil and salt for cooking.
- Soap for basic hygiene.
- Puffed rice, cakes, biscuits, and chocolates to provide ready-to-eat snacks and some comfort to the affected families.
UTF’s distribution of relief materials aimed to meet both immediate food and hygiene needs, as well as to bring some level of comfort to the families, especially the children, who are experiencing significant hardship in these shelters.
The Impact of Record-Breaking Rainfall
The heavy downpours and subsequent landslides have been devastating for communities in Tripura, particularly in the Atharomura hill region. The relentless rain not only displaced numerous families but also damaged infrastructure, blocked roads, and isolated many villages. The record-breaking rainfall event is a stark reminder of the growing impact of climate events in the region, leaving residents vulnerable to sudden natural disasters.
UTF’s visit to the relief camps was more than just a distribution of supplies; it was a demonstration of solidarity with the affected families and a commitment to stand by them in their time of need. The team members spent time listening to the concerns of the residents, assessing additional needs, and offering words of encouragement to those who have endured significant loss.
UTF’s Ongoing Commitment to the Atharomura Community
UTF remains dedicated to providing continuous support to the Atharomura community and other affected areas in Tripura. The organization is working closely with local authorities and volunteers to ensure the safe distribution of resources and to coordinate longer-term relief efforts. UTF is also exploring ways to improve disaster preparedness in vulnerable regions and to advocate for measures that can help mitigate the effects of future rainfall and landslides.
As the families in Atharomura start the difficult journey toward rebuilding their lives, UTF encourages the community to come together and support each other. The organization extends heartfelt gratitude to all donors and volunteers who have contributed to this relief effort and continue to stand by the people of Tripura in these trying times.
UTF will continue its mission of providing aid, fostering resilience, and supporting vulnerable communities through all challenges that lie ahead.
