Santosh Debbarma : Paralysis to Triumph – A Tale of Hope and Community Support

Activity Serial No: LPT/ASN-1/005 | Project Type: Medical Treatment | Beneficiary: Mr. Santosh Debbarma, 25 years | Son of: Late Upendra & Late Mangeswari Debbarma | Address: Nutan Dagia Kami, Darukamura, Sidhai Mohanpur, Simna, Tripura, India | Beneficiary Number: 1

In November 2017, a video went viral on Facebook, showcasing the heartbreaking plight of a young Tiprasa youth. Paralyzed and bedridden for two years, he made a desperate appeal for medical assistance, as both his parents had tragically passed away. The video caught the attention of our organization, and we embarked on a mission to locate this young man.

The very next day, we established contact with Santosh, the young paralytic, and his impoverished brother residing in Nutan Dagia Kami, Darukamura, Sidhai Mohanpur, Simna, Tripura, India.

Our dedicated volunteers arranged for Santosh’s hospitalization at GB Hospital Agartala on November 10, 2017, accompanied by his elder brother. However, our initial attempts were met with resistance from the hospital staff, who doubted the chances of recovery for Santosh. They believed that his condition was beyond help and suggested transferring him to a private hospital if we were determined to pursue treatment.

Despite the discouragement, we persisted and convinced the hospital staff to admit Santosh. Doctors initiated a series of medical tests and treatments. Unfortunately, Santosh’s elder brother left him at the hospital the very next morning, leaving Santosh alone with some cash we provided for his care. We were compelled to hire private nurses to attend to Santosh around the clock, given his complete paralysis and inability to move without assistance.

After extensive tests and diagnoses, doctors confirmed a grim prognosis. Santosh’s spinal cord was severely damaged, and there was no known medical treatment for his condition. However, our team remained hopeful and urged the doctors to do their best. We continued to support Santosh with therapies, exercises, and a nutritious diet.

By January 2018, Santosh began to show signs of improvement, a glimmer of hope in a challenging situation. His progress continued, and on February 18, 2018, he was discharged from the hospital.

Recognizing the importance of ongoing care, we decided that Santosh would remain under our care. Sending him back to his brother’s home was not a viable option, as they lacked the financial means to continue his therapy, treatment, and provide proper nutrition. Santosh continued his therapy and treatment under the care of our dedicated volunteer, Mr. Budhlian Hrangkhawl.

Over time, Santosh’s health improved significantly, and by June 2018, he appeared to be completely cured, walking as if he had never been paralyzed.

On July 4, 2018, with immense joy and gratitude, we made the decision to return Santosh to his brother’s home. Mr. Jashpaul Debbarma and Mr. Sajal Debbarma facilitated his safe return.

We extend our heartfelt thanks to all the generous donors whose contributions made this miraculous transformation possible. Without your support, this journey from paralysis to triumph would not have been achievable. Thank you for your kindness and generosity. May Santosh continue to enjoy good health and a bright future.
